Heat pump grant 2026

The heat pump grant is the largest single grant SEAI offers. A heat pump replaces your oil or gas boiler with an efficient electric system that draws heat from the air or ground.

How the heat pump grant works

Air-to-water, ground source, water source and exhaust-air heat pumps attract up to €12,500 for houses (€9,500 for apartments). Air-to-air systems attract €7,500. Before you install, your home needs a technical heat-loss assessment — SEAI grants €200 towards it for homes built before 2007 — to confirm the house is suitable and won't be expensive to heat.

Am I eligible?

Your home must reach a required insulation and airtightness standard first, which is why heat pumps are usually done alongside insulation upgrades. The work must be carried out by an SEAI-registered heat pump installer, with a BER assessment afterwards.

Questions

Heat pump grant, answered

How much is the heat pump grant in 2026? +

Up to €12,500 for a house with an air-to-water, ground, water or exhaust-air heat pump (€9,500 for apartments), or €7,500 for an air-to-air system, plus €200 towards the required heat-loss assessment.

Do I need insulation before a heat pump? +

Usually, yes. Your home must pass a heat-loss assessment, and most homes need insulation upgrades first so the heat pump runs efficiently and cheaply.

What's the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air? +

Air-to-water heat pumps heat radiators and hot water and get the larger grant. Air-to-air systems heat the air directly, like reversible air conditioning, and get €7,500.
